About Georgia Bulldogs

It was the first time in 1901 that the word bulldog was first mentioned with Georgia athletics at Atlanta’s football game where fans chanted slogans in favor of the Georgians and held banners with a picture of a bulldog tearing a piece of cloth but it was only in 1920 that the teams at the Georgia University were nicknamed, the Bulldogs. The word has its significance as it implies rage and the dignity that is attached to a bulldog. Initially the nickname was frequently used for the football teams but later it became widely used for all the teams and has been in use ever since.

The coaches of the Bulldogs are some of the best at their sport namely Andy Landers, Jack Baurele, Manuel Diaz, Jay Clark, Mark Richt and Jeff Wallace. Georgia Bulldogs are also known for their association with the legends Vince Dooley, Herman Stegeman, Herschel Walker, Fran Tarkenton, Wally Butt and many more who are the best at their own respective sports. It is these coaches and the legends who by the end of 2009 had led the bulldog teams to winning 37 championships at the national level and 130 Championships at the Southeastern Championships, the famous Birmingham based athletic conference for college teams.

The winner of the historic championships at national level in 1942 and then in 1980, the Bulldogs football team, one of their big ones, has won two South Eastern Conferences. Stanford Stadium, with 92,746 seats, makes the Georgia football home. The mascot for the collegiate football team, the white bulldog, is also widely known amongst the fans.

Moving on from football to the Bulldogs tennis teams, the men’s and women’s teams under the coaches Manuel Diaz and Jeff Wallace respectively, have lead the teams in winning eight national tennis championships for men and two NCAA Championships, the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s women’s championship in Tennis. The men’s tennis team is also flourishing owing to the guidance coming from the tennis legend, Dan Magil, the Information director at the university acknowledged for his unmatched contributions towards the Bulldogs. Magil is also a professional tennis player who to date is competing and winning various tennis championships and is a great aid in making the tennis team more and more successful especially the women’s team.

Functioning under the supervision of Suzanne Yoculan, the women’s gymnastic team has been one of the most dominating sports at the university since the past 20 years. The team has also been credited with bringing home 10 national gymnastic championships. The men’s golf team has also become a powerhouse with their 13 Southeastern Conference wins. On the other hand, the women’s golf team also frequently finishes at the top, winning one National Championship and with their tie for the 6th position at the national event of 2006 it ranked as the seventh team that for the last nine years has consistently finished in the top 10.

The women’s basketball team also known as the Lady Dogs is currently one of the highest ranking team that has produced two Olympians in the US, who have earned six gold medals combined. It is one of the most cherished successes at the university. Other Bulldog teams notable for their achievements are the 27 year old swimming and diving teams, the baseball team that in 1990 saw itself winning at the College World Series and the Equestrian team that is the newest in the league of the Bulldogs that competed for the first time in the season 2002-2003.
