Two of Florida’s most successful collegiate football teams, Florida Gators and Florida State Seminoles will once again compete in the playoffs that are scheduled to be held at the Doak Campbell Stadium and the Donald L. Tucker Center. The rivalry of these two Division I National Collegiate Athletics Association teams dates back to 1958 when they first play head to head. The two teams are from two of Florida’s oldest public universities, Florida State University (the Seminoles) and University of Florida (the Gators).

The debut playoff game between these two rivals was won by the Gators, 21-7. For the first two decades, Florida Gators dominated the rivalry, winning 19 games from 1958 to 1976. Over the years, the Seminoles have also stepped up their game. Florida Gators and Florida State Seminoles have clashed 53 times with the Gators having won 37 games. Over the years, only two games between these two rivals have tied; first in 1961, 3-3 and then in 1994, 31-31. The rivalry is currently lead by Florida Gators, 34-22-2.


On a yearly basis, the Gators and the Seminoles compete for the ‘Governor’s Cup’ and the ‘Florida Cup.’ The current winning streak has been established by Florida State Seminoles who won the 2013 cup, 37-7.
