About Edmonton Eskimos


Having their origin in Edmonton, Alberta, Canadian football team Edmonton Eskimos was founded in 1949. Nevertheless, there were other teams playing in the region in history with the same name, like those in 1895 to 1923 and 1929 till 1939. Similarly, the same team was called Esquimaux from 1897 till 1910. Edmonton Eskimos participate in Canadian Football League from West Division. The team has a remarkable playing record ever since the franchise came into being and is currently considered as one of the most successful teams in the Canadian Football League. Edmonton Eskimos are based in Commonwealth Stadium where their home games are played. Their mascots, Nanook and Punter are often seen cheering up the crowd during their home games at the Commonwealth Stadium. The team is currently one of the only three remaining teams in Canadian Football League that are community owned and have their shares floating in local shares market.

The team has been one of the most prominent members of the Canadian Football League, with a shining playing record. They have many major league titles on their credit, including thirteen Grey Cup championship victories. Out of those thirteen, five of the titles were won consecutively, from 1978 till 1982. The team remained victorious in Grey Cup championship in years 1054, 1955, 1956, 1975, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1987, 1993, 2003 and 2005. Other significant titles won by Edmonton Eskimos apart from Grey Cup Series include 22 Western Division championships in years 1953, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1957, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1991, 1997, 2001, 2002 and 2003.
Some of the teams that are often considered as traditional rivals for Edmonton Eskimos include Montreal Alouettes and Calgary Stampeders. Alouettes and Edmonton Eskimos have come together in many important games, including 11 of Grey Cup matches and once in East Final. Similarly, their rivalry with Calgary Stampeders is also renowned, as both Eskimos and Stampeders belong to the same province of Alberta, and their rivalry is often termed as the Battle of Alberta.

There is a great tradition of Edmonton Eskimos that they honor their players who have given commendable services for the team. Names of these players are displayed on Wall of Honor that is situated at the concrete wall that separates the upper from the lower deck of Commonwealth Stadium. There are 24 names that are currently represented on the Wall of Honor this year.
