Whether it's the prestige of the celebrated red, navy & white jersey or the sacred turf of the Angel Stadium, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim are steeped in history. & it predictably requires a constant flow of talent from the grassroots to keep the Halos' flag aloft. That is precisely where the Salt Lake Bees have excelled. They are the minor league baseball affiliates of the Angels, based in Salt Lake City, Utah. Though minor league baseball consists of a number of professional leagues - 240 teams in North & South America - professionally these are at a level which is considered inferior to Major League Baseball. The aim of these teams is to train and provide valuable experience to players showing promise. These players then can challenge for roster spots on the MLB franchise. They act as proverbial feeder clubs. Yet the intensity of the fierce league contests belies that tag. Salt Lake Bees are certified Triple A affiliates, the highest playing level in minor league baseball. The Bees play in the North Division of the Pacific Coast League, the others being the Mexican & International Leagues.

About Salt Lake Bees

Salt Lake Bees play their home games at the Spring Mobile Ballpark, previously called Franklin Covey Field. Picturesque views of the breathtaking Wasatch Mountains are seen over the left & center field walls, & the ballpark can seat around 15,500 enthusiastic supporters. Spring Mobile Ballpark was made over the site of Derk's Field in 1994, which had itself served as the city's minor league ballpark. Salt Lake Bees had existed as a PCL franchise as early as 1915, when businessman Bill Lane brought the floundering exiled Sacramento Solons to Salt Lake City. The name "Bees" is thought to derive from Salt Lake City's stature as the headquarters of the Mormon Church, which uses the bee as a symbol. After eleven productive seasons, 1926 saw a shift to Los Angeles. That triggered a cycle of almost constant rotation which saw Salt Lake City bereft of a PCL franchise until 1958. The Bees had a triumphant return, winning their first-ever PCL pennant in 1959. Becoming a proper farm team for the Chicago Cubs, the Bees moved to Tacoma in 1965, prompting another barren run for the city. 1970 saw the third time the Bees came into existence as a PCL team in Salt Lake, & after numerous name changes to the Gulls & the Trappers & adopting Angels as the new parent MLB franchise, Joe Buzas struck a deal to bring his Portland Beavers team to the city as the Salt Lake Buzz. Conference titles followed in 2000 & 2002, the same year the parent franchise won the World Series historically on a rookie (John Lackey)'s pitch, who had come through the Bees' system. In between, a name change to the Stingers occurred, followed by a 2005 reversion to the Salt Lake Bees. The demand for Salt Lake Bees discount tickets has always been high as showcased by the 1994 PCL all-time attendance record busting feat.

Larry H. Miller was the owner of Salt Lake Bees franchise till his death in 2009. Miller rose to prominence as owner of Utah Jazz. Marc Amicone is General Manager, while former Twins & Dodgers outfielder Bobby Mitchell is manager, completing the selection panel. The University of Utah is instrumental in supplying good players for the farm system, & some of their matches are also held at the Spring Mobile Ballpark. The Bees have produced quite a few stalwarts over the years, including Nick Adenhart, David Ortiz, LaTroy Hawkins, Bernardo Brito & Howie Kendrick.

The latest edition of the Salt Lake Bees has had its great moments. Six division titles in the last 11 years say it all for the team's consistency. Two times Conference title holders, the killer instincts are still missed as the Bees will be gunning for their maiden minor league title.
