About NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Daytona 500

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Daytona 500 is a two hundred lap long race that takes place for a distance of five hundred miles. The race has often been named after its sponsors, such as Daytona 500 by Dodge, Daytona 500 by STP and Daytona 500 by Toyota. It is organized at what is one of the premier racing tracks in the US, in Daytona Beach, Florida. A beautiful beach side location, it is truly a marvelous place to enjoy a race. It is one of four NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races with restrictor plates and has been the opening race of the Sprint Cup Series since 1982.

Among the many NASCAR races, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Daytona 500 ranks number one. It has the largest prize money and is the most prestigious race of the year. While other sports usually have their most popular event at the end of the season, Daytona 500 is the first race of the season. In addition to that, the race has broken records for the highest TV ratings since 1995, leaving behind even the Indianapolis 500. The 2006 race, for example, drew a live TV audience twenty million large and sixth largest in the world that year for any sports events.

Dubbed The Great American Race, the adrenaline pumping NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Daytona 500 is the final event during the popular Speedweeks. Described as the Super Bowl of Stock Car Racing, it has been held each year since 1959 to the joy of millions of Americans and people all over the world. The driver who wins the race is given the Harley J. Earl Trophy and has his car displayed at the Daytona 500 Experience museum for one long year. The current champion of the event is Jimmie Johnson who won the race in 2013.

In addition to being the most popular American racing event, Daytona 500 has a long and rich heritage. This is a race traced back to Daytona Beach's older races which were often two hundred miles long. When the race was organized for the first time in 1959, it became the second five hundred mile long race held after the Southern 500. Since then, millions have seen it live. The drivers who compete in the race often pass through unique qualifiers. To qualify for the first row, drivers have to race a timed round held one week before the event. The rest of the racers are determined by two qualifying races, two laps long one hundred fifty mile races.

Drivers are also chosen through rounds, owner points and ranking in the top thirty five. A driver who has won a NASCAR Championship before and failed to qualify for a spot gets one of four remaining spots. If there is no such drive, the fourth fastest car qualifies. The first driver to win the race was Lee Petty, driving an Oldsmobile car. Since then, many drivers have raced along this path.

Richard Petty holds the record for the most wins, at seven, followed by Cale Yarborough with four wins. Petty Enterprises is the team with the most wins, at nine, with Chevrolet ranking number one in terms of twenty two manufacturer wins. Several drivers have also won the race consecutively, including Richard Petty and Cale Yarborough. Mario Andretti, an Italian, is the only non–American to win the race. This so–called Super Bowl of Stock Car Racing is thus a must see live after ordering NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Daytona 500 tickets.
