Rivalries
The Lakers have had several notable rivalries throughout their history, including:
Boston Celtics: This is perhaps the most famous rivalry in NBA history. The Lakers and Celtics have met in the NBA Finals a record 12 times, with the Lakers winning five of those meetings. The rivalry is fueled by the fact that both teams have been among the most successful franchises in NBA history.
San Antonio Spurs: The Lakers and Spurs have had several intense playoff battles over the years, with the two teams combining for 11 NBA championships since 1999.
Sacramento Kings: While not as well-known as some of the other Lakers rivalries, the Lakers and Kings had several intense playoff series in the early 2000s, including the controversial 2002 Western Conference Finals, which saw the Lakers advance to the NBA Finals amid allegations of biased officiating.
Greatest Moments
The Lakers have had many memorable moments throughout their history, but some of the greatest include:
1972 NBA Finals: The Lakers won their first championship in Los Angeles in 1972, led by Hall of Famers Jerry West, Wilt Chamberlain, and Gail Goodrich. The team set an NBA record with a 33-game winning streak during the regular season.
Magic Johnson's "junior skyhook" in the 1987 NBA Finals: With the Lakers trailing the Boston Celtics in Game 4 of the NBA Finals, Magic Johnson hit a running, off-balance "junior skyhook" to give the Lakers a one-point lead with just two seconds left. The Lakers went on to win the game and the championship.
Kobe Bryant's 81-point game: On January 22, 2006, Kobe Bryant scored 81 points in a game against the Toronto Raptors, the second-highest point total in NBA history behind Wilt Chamberlain's 100-point game.
Greatest Players
The Lakers have had many great players throughout their history, including:
Kobe Bryant: Bryant spent his entire 20-year career with the Lakers, winning five championships and earning 18 All-Star selections. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in NBA history.
Magic Johnson: Johnson helped lead the Lakers to five championships in the 1980s, winning three NBA Finals MVP awards along the way. He is considered one of the greatest point guards of all time.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: Abdul-Jabbar is the NBA's all-time leading scorer, and he won five championships with the Lakers in the 1980s. He also won three MVP awards during his time in Los Angeles.
Shaquille O'Neal: O'Neal was a dominant force for the Lakers during the early 2000s, helping the team win three consecutive championships from 2000-2002. He won three NBA Finals MVP awards during that stretch and was named an All-Star in each of his eight seasons with the Lakers.
Jerry West: West is the Lakers' all-time leading scorer and helped lead the team to its first championship in Los Angeles in 1972. He was a 14-time All-Star and was named the NBA Finals MVP in 1969 despite the Lakers losing the series to the Celtics.
Wilt Chamberlain: Chamberlain played for the Lakers from 1968-1973 and won a championship with the team in 1972. He was a dominant force throughout his career and is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in NBA history.
Elgin Baylor: Baylor played for the Lakers from 1958-1971 and was a 10-time All-Star. He helped lead the team to eight NBA Finals appearances but never won a championship before retiring early in the 1971-72 season.
