Daddy Yankee was born in 1977 as Ramon Ayala Rodriguez in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Prior to pursuing a career in music, he aspired to become a professional baseball player and even tried out for a MLB team. However, misfortune struck, and he was hit by a stray bullet from an AK-47; the bullet remains in his hip and it took him a year and a half to recover from the injury. The injury ended his prospects to be a professional player.

Early Career

After his short lived sports career came to an end, Rodriguez turned his attention to music and focused all his energy on it. His first appearance on a record was on DJ Playero’s 1992 mixtape on the single “So’ Persigueme, No Te Detengas.”

In 1995, Daddy Yankee released his first solo studio album, No Mercy. In his earliest works, the influence of established stars like Vico C, DJ Drako, DJ Nelson and DJ Playero were obvious. He fused together different elements from their music to come with his own unique style. Eventually, Yankee abandoned the idea and became one of the pioneers of the reggaeton genre.

In 1997, he started collaborating and working with other artists. His most notable collaboration at this time was with iconic rapper Nas, with who he worked on the song “The Profecy.” From 1997 to 2002, Yankee released nine music videos and two compilation albums. His work was pretty famous in his native Puerto Rico, but had still not gained traction in Latin America.

Mainstream Success

Daddy Yankee finally achieved mainstream success with the release of his second album, El in 2003. The album focused on important issues like social problems, terrorism, religion and corruption and struck a chord with the Latin world. The album spawned several hits including the songs “Enciende,” “Son Las Doce,” “Guayando” and “Latigazo.” The same year, Yankee collaborated with respected reggaeton producers Luny Tunes on their album Mas Flow. This helped him reach to a wider audience.

A year later, he released the critically acclaimed album, Barrio Fino. The album received multiple Latin Grammy Award and MTV Music Video Award nominations and was a commercial success in Latin America, the US, Japan and Europe. As of today the album has been certified platinum. It was a major milestone for the reggaeton genre and critics have called it one of the most important reggaeton albums in history. Due to the massive success of Barrio Fino, Time Magazine named Daddy Yankee as one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

Daddy Yankee released his next album in 2007. El Cartel: The Big Boss marked a return to the singer’s hip hop roots and was a departure from his usual reggaeton. Released in 2006, it featured the talents of Neli, Scott Storch and, Akon, Nicole Scherzinger, Fergie and Hector Delgado.  The album was another roaring success and became his first album to break into the top ten on the Billboard 200. It was a number one hit on the US rap albums and US Latin albums charts. El Cartel: The Big Boss went on to be certified triple platinum in the US.

The albums Mundial and Prestige followed in 2010 and 2012 respectively. Both albums were number one hits on the US Latin charts and did very well commercially across Latin America. He released his seventh album, King Daddy, in 2013 and is currently working on its follow up, King Daddy 2, which is expected to be released in 2016.

The iconic reggaeton star is currently on tour with his former rival, turned collaborator, Don Omar on The Kingdom Tour. To watch these two urban music heavyweights live in concert, get Daddy Yankee tickets today.

Daddy Yankee Takes a Final Bow

Retiring with a bang, Daddy Yankee’s last album “Legendaddy” is packed with club bangers and arena staples like Pasatiempo, Agua, X Última Vez, and Bombón. Sealing his position as the best the genre has to offer, Daddy Yankee collaborated with young artists as well as stars like Pitbull. Bad Bunny, Myke Towers, Sech, Natti Natasha, Lil Jon, and Nile Rodgers also feature on the album, making it a hardcore reggaeton, Latin trap collection. “Legendaddy” tops the Billboard Latin Albums and sits at 8th spot on Billboard 200. Catch the charismatic singer live when he performs all these tracks along with his other staples.
