Gente De Zona is a Cuban reggaeton or cubatón group. Reggaeton is a genre that has its origins in Latin and Caribbean music. It draws inspiration from a number of musical influences such as Reggae en Espanol, Jamaican dancehall and Trinidadian soca. Reggaeton originated from Panama and spread to many other countries including Cuba, where it got blended with the rich Afro-Cuban music.
In 2000, Gente De Zona was incepted by the rapper Alexander Delgado who came across Michel “el Caro” and joined hands with him to form a band. The group’s name is a slang term for “people from the neighborhood,” indicating its roots in Alamar, a town that lies in the east of the Cuban capital of Havana. It is known to be the place of birth of Cuban hip-hop.
Initially, the newly formed duo of Gente De Zona performed at various local social events and parties. Those performances earned them significant public support, especially in neighborhoods like Guanabacoa, Reglaand and Alamar where hip hop culture was riding high. Over the next few years, Alexander and Michel continued to tour across the country to promote their unique style of music through live concerts and events.
In 2005, Michael departed from the group and was replaced by two new members, Jacob Forever and Nando Pro.
Gente De Zona got off to a flying start with the release of their debut self-titled album which produced two hit tracks, "La Campaña” and "Pa' la Gente de MiZona." From 2007 to 2012, they released three additional studio albums, Lo mejor que suena ahora, A Full, and Oro: Lo nuevo y lo mejor. They also released a few non-album singles including, "Yo Quiero,” and "Ponte Bonita."
Their music not only secured top spots on the Cuban music charts but also became immensely popular in places like Miami and some parts of Europe, where Gente De Zona are referred to as one of the most exceptional reggaeton artists.
2012 was a tough year for Gente De Zona, as Jacob Forever and Nando Pro parted ways with the band to start a gig of their own. It led Randy Malcom Martinez, an ex-artist at Charanga Habanera, to join the band which was solely left with Alexander Delgado.
Gente De Zona have worked alongside a number of internationally acclaimed artists including Pitbull, Enrique Iglesias, and the renowned Dominican rapper, El Cata. They recorded “Con La Ropa Puesta” with El Cata which turned out to be mega-hit and blasted through the speakers in numerous clubs worldwide.
Recently, they have gained significant spotlight in the US for featuring in “Bilando,” which is the most commercially successful track in Enrique’s latest album, Love and Sex. The lyrics of the track have beenwritten by the two members of the Gente De Zona along with Descemer Bueno. Earning platinum certification the track has reaped massive commercial success across the globe. It has charted in more than twenty countries and secured the No.1 position in over eight nations including USA, Mexico, Portugal, Slovakia and Italy.
Sailing through spectacular live performances throughout Europe, South and North America, the band has so far toured across three continents. In 2012, they made a 10-city tour across the United States, starting with a sweltering live performance at the “street party” of Latin Grammy Awards in Hialeah, Florida.
Now that Gente De Zona is heading to the Land of Freedom once again, free the music lover within you and experience the groovy pulsating beat of the Cuban Reggaeton live. Book your Gente De Zona tickets and watch these incredibly talented stars from Cuba live in concert.
