San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo Joan Jett And The Blackhearts
Some of her most recognizable work is with the Blackhearts. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts
made numerous hit singles and an amazing album together. Their most famous work of art was the cover names “I Love Rock n Roll”. In the early eighties this song was the rage and was heard on the lips of all and sundry. Many other hit songs became every teenager’s melody over the years such as, “I Hate Myself for Loving You”, “Light of Day” and “Do You Want to Touch Me”.
Most of the music which she has churned out is near to the hearts of most middle-class American families, as she herself belongs to the same. Her native town of Philadelphia has a certain signature to its rock genre. It is rhythmic and driven by the melancholy of beat and drums. The lyrics are close to the heart of common men and women, related to love, and inadequacies of “the system”. Joan Jett isn’t just called the “Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll” because she is a pretty head banger; her albums have gone Platinum and Gold only because her work comes from the heart and touches tens of thousands of her fans. This makes the Joan Jett and the Blackhearts
one of the best music bands ever.
In the early days, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts
performed as opening artists for the more established bands like The Police and Queen. It is quite intriguing to learn that the way she got around to forming the Blackhearts was very unorthodox. She places and ad in the classifieds of a weekly L.A. paper. She mentioned that she was in search of three men that play instruments like bass and guitar to audition for her upcoming shows. After many deliberations and auditions, the final three chosen were, Gary Ryan, Danny O’Brian and Eric Ambel. The new montage embarked on their first European tour where the featured in Holland and the UK. However, that would be the last gig they would be all doing together. The new found fame took its toll on O’Brian and he decided to stay back in the UK to pursue other interests. After getting back from the European Tour, the remaining trio comprising Ryan, Ambel and Jett settled in New York at Long Beach. They needed a drummer and fast. Auditions began and sooner than later they all agreed on Lee Crystal. They began their tour of the US and amassed tens of thousands of fans, their popularity started to grow immensely. Their unorthodox publicity stunts, like selling their albums from the trunk of their Cadillac after concerts drew unimaginable love for them. Joan Jett and The Blackhearts were on their way to stardom. The demand of fans grew by the hour and therefore some serious aid was needed. Casablanca Records came to the rescue and released Jett’s album again.
By the time “I Love Rock n Roll” was in recording, another change was made and this time it was Ambel who was replaced by a local talent named Ricky Byrd. Some believe, the single would never have reached the levels of recognition it did, has Joan stuck with Ambel. “I Love Rock and Roll” was phenomenal, reaching number fifty six on the Billboard list of all time songs. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts
would go on to record over forty number one hit singles.
Jett continued making changes in the band and also took a shot at acting alongside a-list actors such as Michael J. Fox in Light of Day. With a critically acclaimed performance and music on her mind it should be no surprise that Joan has kept the spark alive with the Joan Jett and the Blackhearts band.
