Carolina Hurricanes

Carolina Hurricanes came into existence back in 1971, and after their relocation they’ve been the only major league franchise in the state of North Carolina that is based in the city of Raleigh. Carolina Hurricanes play as the members of Eastern Conferences’ Southeast Division of the National Hockey League. The team was originally formed as the New England Whalers and competed in the World Hockey Association. However, later as the World Hockey Association merged with the National Hockey League the team was renamed to Hartford Whalers. The team was finally renamed to Carolina Hurricanes back in 1997 after they relocated to North Carolina. During their days as Whalers in WMA, the team was one of the few stable franchises in the league along with Winnipeg Jets, Edmonton Oilers and Quebec Nordiques. That is why all of these franchises were added to National Hockey League after the two leagues merged in 1979. But soon after joining NHL, the team’s fortunes changed and they didn’t enjoy as much success as they did in WMA. The team enjoyed minor amount of success during the late half of the 80s, but they didn’t enjoy any major success as such.
 
Later in the March of 1997, it was decided that the team would move to the Entertainment and Sports Arena in Raleigh, because the club wasn’t able to score a deal for a better facility for them in Hartford. After moving to Raleigh, the team was renamed to Carolina Hurricanes. As the team moved to Raleigh, the Entertainment and Sports Arena wasn’t completed and it took it two more years. So during that time the team played its home games at the Greensboro Coliseum, ninety minutes away from Raleigh. After having two disastrous seasons due to inferior attendance, the team finally moved to ESA in 1999, and played another lackluster season there. Hurricanes caused a stir on national level for the first time during their 2002 season.
 
Hurricanes shocked the fans during their 2004-05 season when they scored the franchise’s best season record for its 34-year old history. Hurricanes broke all of the previous franchise records by finishing off their season with the record of 52-22-8. After finally being able to claim more than fifty wins, Hurricanes also claimed their third Division title as they defeated Tampa Bay Lightning in the ranks. Hurricanes faced Canadiens in playoffs, and after a rough start they swept the Canadiens too. And after defeating Devils and Sabres in for conference championship, Hurricanes defeated Oilers in the finals to win their first and only Stanley Cup.
