The New Orleans Hornets got their start in 1988 as the Charlotte Hornets, based in Charlotte, North Carolina. The team, owned by local businessman, George Shinn performed quite well, making it to the playoffs and maintaining a good record overall. Controversies over the team’s ownership and a proposed new arena led to the team moving to New Orleans. Despite a few setbacks during the first couple of seasons, the team managed to get back on its feet. In 2005, after hurricane Katrina, the team moved to Oklahoma City and played two seasons while based there. In 2008, the Hornets returned to New Orleans. The city, having been awarded the NBA All Star Game for the year, had high hopes pinned on the team, and the Hornets did not disappoint. In their most successful season ever, the Hornets went on to take down some of the top teams in the NBA, finishing the season with an amazing 56-26 record. Fans were also overjoyed when the team brought home the Southwest Division title and clinched the second seed for the Western Conference. The same year, the team beat the Dallas Mavericks in the playoffs and went all the way to the semifinals.
In late 2008, the New Orleans Hornets unveiled a new logo and new uniforms with Creole Blue, Mardi Gras Gold and Dark Purple being the main colors. The team continued its winning streak and made it to the playoffs in 2009 and 2011. In late 2011, the team received players Chris Kaman, Al-Farouq Aminu and Eric Gordon in an exchange with the Los Angeles Clippers. In addition to these players, the squad includes forwards Trevor Ariza, Carl Landry and Gustavo Ayon, who along with Aminu make a strong offensive lineup. Guards Marco Belinelli, Xavier Henry, Jarret Jack and Carldell Johnson make up an almost impenetrable defense. Under the leadership of head coach Monty Williams and assistant coaches Randy Ayers, Fred Vinson and Dave Hanners, the team is guaranteed to reach new heights.
