Wells Fargo Arena, the home ground of Iowa Energy
, is a multi-purpose arena with a seating capacity of over sixteen thousand for basketball games. It is part of Iowa Events Center and opened in year 2005, with an estimated cost of ninety-nine million dollars. The ground is also home to the AFL squad of Iowa Barnstormers and the AHL franchise, Iowa Chops. Designed by architect HOK Sport, the arena is Des Moines region’s spot for concerts and sport events, while the state’s basketball tournaments and high school wrestling matches.
In 2007, D-League gave Des Moines an expansion team of Iowa, which was supposed to be one among the four expansion teams awarded during the 2007-08 season. The team is operated and owned by an Iowa ownership group headed by Jerry Crawford, and includes Sheldon Ohringer, Michael Richards, Bruce Rastetter, Paul Drey and Gary Kirke. Nick Nurse, a former player of Northern Iowa, was hired as the first coach of the team. A naming contest was initially held, but in June of 2007, it was announced that the team would be called Iowa Energy
, while its logos and colors were also declared. An orange basketball with the word printed across it, is the team’s logo with the selected team colors red, orange and purple. The team’s affiliates were announced to be two other NBA teams namely Miami Heat and Chicago Bulls.

have won several awards from various categories; Courtney Sim and Curtis Stinson have taken the Most Valuable Player Award
of NBA D-League.
Othyus Jeffers took an award for Rookie of the Year
, and also garnered an All-Star Game selection, twice while playing for the Energy. In fact, several more Energy players have won the All-Star selections including Curtis Stinson, Courtney Sims, Dwayne Mitchell, Cartier Martin and Earl Barron.
coaches have also been noted for winning awards and honors; Mick Nurse won the award for Coach of the Year
