The Greensboro Grasshoppers are fond of being called with new names every few years. Their first official name was the Greensboro Patriots. Hoppers kept this name for some years and became the Greensboro Pirates in the mid 50s. Perhaps their fans didn't accept them as the Pirates so the team was switched to the old name "the Patriots". In the late 50s, the Hoppers caught the Yankee virus and consequently named themselves the Greensboro Yankees but after a decade had to switch back to being the Patriots again. Hoppers finally found a valid reason to change their names once again. It was their name clash with the New England Patriots. This time the name Hornet was suggest, which was happily accepted by their fans. Although the team tried another name i.e. Greensboro Bats before switching to the Hoppers, but Hornets is what they are still sometimes called with.
