About Reading Royals

In year 2001, the franchise then called Columbus Chill returned to the ECHL with an active status with a new identity that comprised of new colors and the new name, Reading Royals. The team became ECHL affiliates with Manchester Monarchs of the AHL and the Los Angeles Kings of the NHL. In 2009, the team also renewed affiliates with the Toronto Maple Leaves, Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League and Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League. The team’s new logo represents a roaring lions head with a king’s crown, and the new colors of the team are black, purple gray and white.
Reading Royals entered their first Kelly Cup playoffs in 2004 under head coach Derek Clancy, at which point they had yet only marked their third season, and took the North Division Championship. From there on to the next season they were the regular season champions of the North Division until they finally lost to the Trenton Titans when they simultaneously also lost the Kelly Cup Championship, in the finals of the North Division. So far the Royals have won the Divisions Championships of 2004-05 and 2010-11. The team’s current head coach is Larry Courville and general manager is Mark Wallace.
Reading Royals home games are played at Reading Sovereign Center in Pennsylvania, which is the same place where the ECHL’s skills challenge and the 2009 All-Star Game were organized and hosted. Reading Sovereign Center is well known for being a huge multi-purpose arena, with over seven thousand seating capacity and was made and completed on the former location of the Astor Theatre in year 2001.
