About Tennessee Volunteers

The Tennessee Volunteers’ official colors are white, smoky gray and orange. The university’s women's teams are dubbed the Lady Volunteers whereas the men's teams are known simply as the Volunteers.. They have been part of the Southeastern Conference since their founding in 1932 and are amongst the top teams of the conference. Many of their teams are ranked in the Top 25 today but the school is most famous for its football team and its women's basketball team. The Tennessee Volunteers football team won the first BCS National Championship Game held in the history of the spot. The Tennessee Volunteers’ women's basketball team has won over eight National Championships, most recently winning the title consecutively in 2007 and 2008.

Overall, the Volunteers have won one hundred and forty seven Southeastern Conference Championships, as well as twenty three National Championships in  various sports. Only the women's rowing team is not part of the SEC but plays in the Conference USA. It most recently won the 2010 championship in the conference.

The Volunteers also have a number of rich traditions. This includes the spectacular Vol Navy, which is one of the most unique experiences at game day: two hundred boats of all sizes form a gigantic floating tailgate party every fall, arriving just before the home games are set to begin. This makes the Volunteers home games some of the most exciting in the nation. Similarly, their band, the Pride of the Southland, is one of the best known in the nation and has represented Tennessee at eleven Presidential Inaugurations during the last forty ears. The band has played for all American presidents from Dwight D. Eisenhower to President Barack Obama. The band has also played at forty Bowls and adds much to the University's day to day sports activities. The Volunteers men's baseball team has played in the NCAA Tournament nine times and four times in the College World Series. Many of their players have gone on to player in Major League Baseball, including Luke Hovechar, who was the number one overall pick in the 2006 draft.

Their women's basketball team is one of the toughest in the US, having won a record eight NCAA Division I National Championships, the largest number in women's basketball in the US.  The Lady Volunteers women's basketball team has been led by Pat Summitt, who is considered as one of the all–time great basketball coaches in the history of the NCAA. During her tenure, the graduation rate was at a hundred percent for all players. Today, the team is led by Coach Holly Warlick. The Volunteer’s fiercest basketball rivalry is with the University of Connecticut, with both team’s having faced each other in some of the biggest battles in women's college basketball. Pat Summitt, former head coach, also received the Arthur Ashe Courage Award.
