Long Day’s Journey into Night: An epic play
Long Day’s Journey into Night is a drama which has been divided into four acts by the famous American playwright, Eugene O’Neill in 1941-42. It was first published in 1956. O’Neill is the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, a member of the American Theater Hall of Fame and also has a Theatre named after him that has housed plays like Annie, Yentl and Spring Awakening. Long Day’s Journey into Night is widely considered one of his masterpieces and was well received by the masses when it was performed for the first time. It then made its way to Broadway during the same year, 1956, in November and generated positive feedback from the fans and the critics to become a massive hit.
The story of the play revolves around the Tyrone family including parents, James and Mary and their sons, Edmund and Jamie. One August morning in 1912, the action begin just after the breakfast. Mary returns to her home after receiving treatment in a sanatorium for morphine addiction and Edmund begins to show signs of tuberculosis.
These two medical conditions make up most of the plot however the characters revisit old fights which expose unhealed wounds that the entire family has not been able to overcome. Furthermore the childrens’ mother, Mary argues over Jamie and Edmund’s failure to become as successful as their father had imagined and as the day goes on, the men consume more alcohol until they are on the verge of passing out in Act IV.
Most of the play’s ploy revolves around the numerous arguments that take place. The plot goes back and forth between the entire family in all four ‘acts and each act focuses on an interplay between two specific characters. The story shows that this is not the first day full of fighting, bitterness and an underlying love but, just another one in a long string of similar days for the Tyrones.
