An Uplifting & Gripping New Musical Makes Way to Theatre

Named after Neil Diamond’s 1976 album “Beautiful Noise”, the musical is a celebration of singer’s successful career as he became one of the best-selling artists of all-time. Framed by a fictional session with a therapist, the musical rakes its course from Diamond reacting to the lyrics of his songs. Every song is supported by an ensemble cast and onstage band. Storywriter McCarten doesn’t shy away from adding darker aspects of Diamond’s life and includes infidelity, and divorces into the plot. While Neil Diamond’s story isn’t unique, it has been adapted aesthetically for stage without sounding boring or monotonous. Told through the lens of a therapy session, it shows how Neil was feeling during a particular moment in his life.

The Cast Rises to the Occasion

The cast of A Beautiful Noise, especially Will Swenson who plays the younger version of Neil Diamond, shines in his role. The actor admitted that it’s not a straightforward character and rather beautiful and unconventional. He has perfectly adapted to playing Neil Diamond, developing an impression that matches the legends. The older version of Diamond is played by Mark Jacoby who sits during the therapy session and recalls his heydays. Jacoby’s dynamic performance style and facial expressions speak to the audience. The role of Diamond’s wives are played by Robyn Hurder who stars as Marcia Murphey and Jessie Fisher as his first wife Jaye Posner. Linda Powell adds a lot of balance to the fiery performances with her nuanced acting.

While the performers remain the highlight of A Beautiful Noise, it’s surely the music that’s the driving force of the musical. The riveting, sing-along musical is packed with Diamond’s best-selling songs like “Cracklin’ Rosie”, “Cherry, Cherry”, “Song, Sung Blue”, “Shilo”, and the audience favorite “Sweet Caroline”. In the act two, the audience were treated to “Forever in Blue Jeans”, “I Am…I Said”, and “Holly Holy”.

David Rockwell’s set design works well with the fast pace of the show and is aided by Kevin Adam’s lighting. A Beautiful Noise – The Neil Diamond Musical plays till August 6, 2022 at the Emerson Colonial Theatre, after which it will have its premiere at the Broadhurst Theatre in New York from November 2022 till June 2023.
