How it Began

A talented director who is famous for directing the popular CBS sitcom, ‘Kevin Can Wait,’ Andy Fickman decided to work on a musical based on the popular Hollywood flick, ‘Heathers.’ For this purpose, he teamed up with that film’s screenwriter, Daniel Waters and before long, the duo began to jot down ideas. At the same time, Fickman started to consider adding the famous lyricist and composer, Laurence Crawford O’ Keefe to the team after seeing his work in the three-time Laurence Olivier Award winning musical, ‘Legally Blonde.’

Andy Fickman then paired O’ Keefe with Kevin Murphy who provided lyrics for the musical, ‘Reefer Madness’ and the result was magical. The duo instantly connected and went on to not only write the book but also provide the music and lyrics of Heathers: The Musical.

Debut as a Concert

In 2010, the process of casting commenced. The Drama Desk Award winner for, ‘Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play,’ Annaleigh Ashford was casted as Veronica Sawyer whereas the star of hit Broadway musical, ‘Finding Neverland,’ Jeremy Jordan, was casted as J.D. The role of Heather Chandler, Heather McNamara and Heather Duke were given to Jenna Leigh Green, Corri English and Christine Lakin respectively.

After the casting concluded, Heathers: The Musical debuted as a concert. Directed by Andy Fickman, the show completed two performances at the Joe’s Pub in the New York City on September 13 & 14, 2010. Three years later, the musical was performed live in Los Angeles where it received great response from the fans.

Off-Broadway Debut

In 2013, it was announced that Heathers: The Musical will be making its Off-Broadway debut in the spring of 2014. A year later, the cast members were revealed which included, Elle McLemore as Heather McNamara, Alice Lee as Heather Duke and Jessica Keenan Wynn as Heather Chandler. The Tony Award winner for, ‘Best Supporting Actor in a Musical,’ Anthony Crivello was also casted in the musical as Bill Sweeney. Once the cast members were finalized, the show opened at the New World Stages in New York City on March 31, 2014. The musical ran there till August 4, 2014.

What Is It About?

Heather: The Musical is divided in two acts. The story revolves around Veronica Sawyer who is a student at Westerberg High. She sets a goal to become famous in school and even tries to get the attention of the popular group that goes by the name Heathers. It doesn't work out initially but one day Sawyer uses her skills to get them out of detention. This impresses the leader of the trio, Heather Chandler so much that she allows her to join the group.
