About The Hunchback of Notre Dame – The Musical
The latest production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a glorious retelling of a masterpiece by Victor Hugo, dating back to 1996. This intense story of faith, love and prejudice will leave you mesmerized. Combine that, with the larger than life 30-person choir present at every performance, and the production becomes truly phenomenal.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame Broadway Musical is based on the 1996 Disney film and the novel by Victor Hugo in 1831. The music is by Alan Menken (Aladdin, Newsies and The Little Mermaid), while the lyrics are the work of Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin and Godspell). Other cast members of the musical include Dan’yelle Williamson as Esmeralda, Brandon O’Neill as Phoebus, Allen Fitzpatrick as Dom Claude Frollo and Dane Stokinger as Clopin.
What is most interesting about this latest production is that it places a real-life deaf actor in the center of its storyline. The super-talented Joshua Castille stars as Quasimodo in The Hunchback of Notre Dame. He will even deliver his song lyrics in American Sign Language, while E.J. Cardona, the actor playing one of the gargoyles at the cathedral will sing the words.
About Joshua Castille
Joshua Castille, one of the biggest attractions of this production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, is a fresh-faced actor from Louisiana. He got involved in performing arts at his high school and eventually left his home to pursue a degree in theater in Washington, DC. From there onwards, the talented actor’s success and fame knew no bounds.
Like the hunchbacked Quasimodo in Hugo Victor’s story, Castille is deaf. However, that does not stop him from enthusiastically delivering song lyrics by Stephen Schwartz in American Sign Language, while E.J. Cardona sings the words to Alan Menken’s music.
Even though it was a challenge to execute a musical with two forms of communication so strongly interwoven, veteran director, Glenn Casale was up for it. The complex and well-thought out staging pattern, especially for a musical, was made to look so effortless and fluid for the audience, that it was almost hard to believe.
Talking about his casting of Castille for the role, Casale says, “John came in and gave the most remarkable audition ever seen."
