Born to be a dancer
Derek Hough was born in Salt Lake City, Utah to parents Marianne and Bruce Hough. His grandparents were dancers so becoming a professional dancer was always on the cards. At the age of 12, his parents sent him to London where dance coaches, Shirley Ballas and Corky Ballas took him under their wing.
Hough along with his sister, Julianne and the Ballas’ son, Mark Ballas were then schooled at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts where they were given training in theater, song and gymnastics. The trio also learned multiple forms of dance including, tap, ballet and jazz and soon formed their own group 2B1G. Together, they performed in different dance competitions across the United States and the United Kingdom which gave them some exposure.
As time passed, Derek Hough perfected his skills as a ballroom and Latin dancer. At the age of 18, he became the WDSF World Latin Champion which had the entire dance community talking about him. He also received the New York Dance Alliance Outstanding Dance and LA Outstanding Dancer of the Year Awards which helped him gain more traction in the States. Having already proved his amazing dancing talents, Hough was soon asked to perform a number with the Tony winning writer, actor and comedian, Neil Patrick Harris at the Primetime Emmy Awards in 2013. He later won an Emmy that night for, ‘Outstanding Choreography.’
Taking things to the next level
In the spring of 2013, Derek Hough revealed some exciting news by announcing that he will be teaming up with five-time Grand Prix Final Champions, Charlie White and Meryl Davis to work on a number together. He helped choreograph the dance and they won a gold medal with the routine at the Sochi Winter Olympics in 2014.
In 2014, he and his sister, Julianne Hough set out on, ‘Move Live On Tour’ which had them trekking through forty plus cities around the United States and Canada. The tour became such a huge success that the duo embarked on a road trip again the following year. It started on June 12, 2015 and lasted till August 8, 2015.
