The Creative Force Behind Hello Dolly!

Hello, Dolly! is the collective effort of Jerry Herman and Michael Stewart. The score and lyrics of this musical is provided by Herman while the book is written by Stewart. The show is based on the 1938 farce, 'The Merchants of Yonkers' by Thornton Wilder which he later revised and re-titled it as 'The Matchmaker.' 

The Plot

The tale of Hello, Dolly! circles around Dolly Levi, a famed New York based matchmaker who receives her toughest challenge when she is assigned with the task of finding a suitable wife for rich and grumpy Horace Vandergelder. Although, she is quite successful in matching others in the city including Horace's niece and two clerks but struggles to find a match for him. Dolly then soon realizes that she is falling for Horace and decides to marry him but only if her late husband sends a sign and if he himself would want to have her.

Broadway Production

Hello, Dolly! made its Broadway debut at the St. James Theatre on January 16, 1964. Directed and choreographed by Gower Champion, the show starred Carol Channing as Dolly and David Burns as Horace. The production became hit and ran for 2,884 performances before it closed on December 27, 1970. It won nine Tony Awards including three for, 'Best Musical,' 'Best Book of a Musical' and 'Best Original Score.'

Hello, Dolly! is currently touring. As of now, it is being staged at the Bass Performance Hall where it will run till January 24, 2020. The show will then be performed in different cities such as Naples, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Providence, Buffalo, Toronto, Lexington and Manley.
