Hamilton: An American Musical
While Hamilton is based on and in New York City, it is a universally relatable story of the underdog. It also addresses the importance and strength of diversity, feminism and gun control, amongst other things. Therefore, while the play just happened to debut in “the greatest city in the world” it is at home on pretty much any stage. And even if you don’t relate to it, there is such a powerhouse of information being thrown your way in the fast-paced raps that you just remain engrossed in the language.
The play re-imagines America’s first treasury secretary Alexander Hamilton and the revolutionaries around him as hip-hop artists and people of color. He tells the story of “America then” by portraying it through the face and language of “America now”. In doing so, he makes the glaring portrayal of the fact that not much has changed. “In a nation founded by immigrants, “immigrant” has somehow become a bad word” is the first of these, that there has always been a battle about who is the ‘real American’ without realizing that everyone in this country makes America, no matter where they come from. Other issues touched upon are gun violence and the state autonomy which are issues the present government is trying to deal with.
