Andrew Lloyd Weber is a famous composer and musical theater impresario. He was born in London in 1948. Son of parents who were both professional musicians, it is not surprising that Andrew Lloyd Weber also turned out to be a music genius. His younger brother is also a well known cellist. Weber being a musical prodigy, started writing his own compositions at a very young age. Always wanting to perform in front of an audience, he recruited his Aunt Viola to sit as a listener while he and his younger brother put on musical shows for her. He even built a toy theater for his performances. Weber got his early schooling from Westminster School, where he was a Queen’s Scholar. Later he attended the Royal College of Music to pursue a degree in musical theater.
He came across the famous lyricist Tim Rice and decided to pursue a career is music, with encouragement provided by Rice. He composed different musicals as well as pop songs. His work on "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" was met with great success and gave Andrew Lloyd Weber the confidence he needed take on more projects. Weber’s music style is very eclectic. From the 1960s and coming to the 2000s, he has shown that he does not patronize a particular musical genre. He has dabbled with all sorts of music styles which include pop, rock, jazz and even electro-acoustic music. His musicals are a diverse mixture of different musical genres that are extremely pleasant to listen to.
Andrew Lloyd Weber’s real fame came in 1971 when his rock opera "Jesus Christ Superstar" opened to public. He collaborated with Tim Rice for a musical biopic titled "Evita". This venture was based on the story of the Argentinean Eva Peron and was extremely successful. Weber spent the early part of his career updating the musical genres used in theater musicals. In 1981 he came up with another musical which was named "Cats". The musical was based on T. S. Eliot’s poems. This venture was produced at the New London Theater. This play was much loved by the audience, not only for its remarkable compositions but also for the extremely innovative stage design. The play was considered record breaking in its performance and stayed on stage for twenty one seasons. The musical was so famous that it played for more than 8000 times in London and more than 7000 times in New York City.
"The Phantom of the Opera" was another hit production that Andrew Lloyd Weber passed on to the public. The musical was based on a book written by Gaston Leroux. The play became one of the most successful shows of all time. An approximate number of eighty million people attended the musical and it earned 3.3 million dollars.
The dynamic artist was knighted as Sir Andrew Lloyd Weber in 1992. Moreover, he was also given the honorary peer title of Baron Lloyd Weber in 1997. Andrew Lloyd Weber won a lot of rewards in his lifetime. All of these awards are extremely prestigious and well deserved. These include Academy Award for Best Music, Academy Award for Original Music, seven Tony Awards and three Grammy Awards.
Weber is the owner of seven theaters in London. He worked hard to restore these theaters. Besides music, Weber indulges himself in Victorian Art and Pre-Raphaelite Art.
