A Little History
In 1983, Jim Crockett Promotions, a WWE rival, debuted “Starrcade” and it turned out to be a massive hit. Vince Mcmahon reacted by coming up with WrestleMania and the success of the event eventually Jim Crockett Promotions went out of business. Vince did not stop there and added more shows to the WWE repertoire, one of which was SummerSlam.
The Inaugural SummerSlam
The first edition of SummerSlam took place on August 29, 1988 at the iconic Madison Square Garden. The event threw up quite a lot of memorable matches, with one of them being the Intercontinental Title match between The Ultimate Warrior and the champion Honky Tonk Man. The latter had been the champion for fourteen months but lost the title in just thirteen seconds. It remains to this day one of the most shocking results in WWE history.

Shawn Michael’s Revenge
It was revealed that Triple H was the man who attacked Shawn Michaels and put him in a wheelchair. Once Shawn Michaels recovered, the stage was set for these two legends to collide at SummerSlam 2002. The match lived up to expectations, with Michaels coming out on top in the end.
Brock Lesnar’s Arrival
Brock Lesnar was billed as the Next Big Thing upon his arrival in the WWE. He received his first shot at the WWE Championship in 2002 when he took on The Rock. Brock and Rock put on a spectacle for the fans that will forever be remembered as one of the greatest matches in WWE history. In the end, Lesnar hit his finishing move, the F-5, to win the match and become the youngest WWE Champion ever at that time.
British Bulldog Becomes the Intercontinental Champion
In 1992, SummerSlam made its way to London, UK. The show took place at the legendary Wembley Stadium and the highlight of the event was the match between the reigning Intercontinental Champion, Bret Hart and his brother-in-law, The British Bulldog. A capacity crowd of 80,355 witnessed a bout for the ages. It was Hart’s technical prowess against the Bulldog’s brute force. The British Bulldog eventually triumphed in what remains to this day one of the greatest matches in SummerSlam history.
