The WWE Money in the Bank made its debut in the year 2005 as part of WWE’s biggest event, WrestleMania 21. Back then, the match was specific to only the Raw brand. Edge became the first ever WWE superstar to win the Money in the Bank ladder match. The Money in the Bank was an instant hit right from the word go. WWE’s two brands Raw and SmackDown had their own separate MITB matches. The Raw match was won by The Miz, while Kane won the SmackDown bout. The main event was the WWE Championship match between the title holder Sheamus and John Cena. It was a Steel Cage Match, which the former won by escaping the cage.
The Money in the Bank Format
The format of the match revolves around a briefcase hanging from the ceiling of the arena. The winner has to climb a folding ladder and unhook the case to be crowned the winner. The briefcase contains a contract that allows the winner to contest for the World Championship or the WWE title anytime he wants within a year.

Kane won the match and clinched the title.
CM Punk Takes the WWE Championship with Him
In 2011, CM Punk challenged John Cena, the WWE Champion, for the gold. Punk not only overcome John Cena but also countered outside interference from Vince McMahon, and a failed cash in attempt by Alberto Del Rio. According to the storyline, this was to be CM Punk’s last ever night in the WWE and he left the company with the WWE title firmly in his grasp.
Brock Lesnar Comes Out of Nowhere to Clinch the Briefcase
The MITB PPV in 2019 threw up one of the biggest shocks in the show’s history. Sami Zayn, one of the contestants, was pulled from the match and the bout went ahead without him. In the latter stages of the match, Brock Lesnar’s music blared over the sound system and “The Beast” emerged to take Zayn’s place. Lesnar destroyed the competition and climbed the ladder to grab the briefcase. Lesnar sitting atop the ladder and grinning with the briefcase in his hands is an iconic moment that will forever be associated with WWE Money in the Bank.
