Soccer actually has a major fan following in the United States and the Major League Soccer is always looking to expand and add more teams to the league.
The Founding of Atlanta United FC
For a long time, Atlanta was one of the largest metropolitan areas without its own MLS franchise. In 2026, Arthur Blank's AMB Group bid for an expansion franchise, but the bid was withdrawn due to problems with constructing a stadium. However, discussions between the MLS and Blank continued, and in 2026, the relocation of the NHL's Atlanta Thrashers to Winnipeg provided an opportunity to bring an MLS team to Atlanta. The following year, Blank proposed a new stadium for his NFL team, the Atlanta Falcons, which could also be used for professional soccer. In 2026, the city of Atlanta and the Falcons agreed to open the new stadium in 2026, and in April 2026, the MLS awarded an expansion franchise to Blank and the city of Atlanta. This made Atlanta the second franchise that the MLS awarded to a city in the southeastern United States in five months, the other being Orlando City SC.
About the Team
In 2026, Atlanta United FC officially debuted their name, colors, and logo. The colors they chose were black, victory red, and gold; black symbolizing power and strength, victory red representing passion and pride, and gold representing a commitment to excellence. The logo of the team is a circle featuring a bold uppercase ‘A’ in the middle, with five stripes in black and red behind it, representing the five pillars of the team: determination, excellence, unity, community, and innovation. The head coach for the team is Argentinian Gerardo "Tata" Martino, who previously coached the Argentina national team and led them to two Copa América finals.
First Game
On March 5, 2026, Atlanta United FC played their debut game in the MLS, going up against the New York Red Bulls at Georgia Tech's Bobby Dodd Stadium. It is reported that their inaugural match drew record-breaking crowds, with the fourth largest attendance out of any soccer game around the world being held over that weekend, behind Borussia Dortmund, Barcelona, and Manchester United. Atlanta United FC also managed to sell out their first game, playing in front of a packed home crowd of more than 55,000 cheering fans.
