Arthur Blank, the owner of the Atlanta Falcons wanted a soccer team in the city since it was the biggest metropolitan area without an MLS team. So, in the year 2008 he made a bid with the MLS in order to get an expansion team. That was withdrawn in 2009 because it was unable to construct a soccer stadium.

Then in 2011, the Atlanta Thrashers of the NHL became the Winnipeg Jets, talks about an MLS team began once again. Those discussions lingered on for two years and eventually an agreement was reached. On April 16, 2014, Blank made the announcement that the MLS had given Atlanta its own soccer team which will start to play in the year 2017.
