The New Orleans Pelicans play their home games and practice at the New Orleans Arena, located in New Orleans, Louisiana. Their official colors are gold, navy, red, and white. This franchise is owned by Tom Benson, coached by head coach Monty Williams, and managed by general manager Dell Demps. The Iowa Energy is the team's D-League affiliate. The Pelicans won the 2008 Southwest Division Championship, much to the joy of their numerous fans. After Hurricane Katrina, the franchise spent two seasons in Oklahoma City, as the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets, before returning to the city after much of the damage had been repaired.
The New Orleans Pelicans have won nearly a thousand games so far and qualified for the post-season twelve times. They have won five playoff series, emerging as the Southwest Division champions. The franchise was founded in 1985 when the NBA announced that it would be expanding the league by four franchises. George Shinn, a Kannapolis entrepreneur, brought together a group of businessmen and bid for a franchise. The region already had a vibrant college basketball scene and had been home to the Carolina Cougars of the American Basketball Association before its merger with the NBA.
With the Charlotte Coliseum under construction, Charlotte became a prime venue for the franchise, thus leading to the NBA awarding George Shinn's group a franchise in 1987. Thus, the twenty-fourth team of the NBA was born, alongside three other franchises in Orlando, Miami, and Minneapolis-Saint Paul. A naming contest ensued, and the team was named the Hornets. Carl Scheer became the team's first general manager, with Dick Harter as the first head coach. Today, the franchise has gone on to see players such as Robert Parish inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. They have also won a good number of awards and honors, including the Rookie of the Year Award to Larry Johnson, the Sixth Man of the Year Award to Dell Curry, the All-Star Game MVP to Glen Rice, the Executive of the Year Award to Bob Bass, and Larry Johnson and Glen Rice being part of the All-NBA Second Team. In short, it is a professional basketball team whose games are worth seeing live with New Orleans Pelicans tickets.
