About the Harlem Globetrotters

The Harlem Globetrotters is an exhibition basketball team. This means that the Globetrotters compete in friendly, warm up games to display basketball artistry, skillful ball handling and wholesome entertainment for the entire family. Formed in 1926, the exhibition team was initially named the Chicago Globetrotters, based in Chicago, Illinois. The team played its first friendly game at the Savoy Ballroom in 1927. Within a year’s time, the basketball team was seen touring across Illinois and Iowa. In 1929, the Chicago Globetrotters changed its name to the New York Harlem Globetrotters and in the same year the team’s Coach Abraham M. Saperstein decided to move the team to Harlem, New York as the city was considered to be the African-American culture’s hub.
