CONMEBOL or the South American Confederation is one of the six confederations recognized by FIFA, and is one of the strongest confederations with teams such as Brazil and Argentina. The international FIFA World Cup has been won most times by teams in CONMEBOL than any other confederation. Since the confederation has ten members, and twelve teams compete in the tournament, two teams from outside the confederation are invited to participate in the event. Four teams namely US, Mexico, Costa Rica and Jamaica competed for berths in Copa America from the CONCACAF region. Out of the four teams, Mexico and Jamaica have made it into the competition.

US, Costa Rica and Mexico have been regular members in the past years. Mexico has featured in nine editions, Costa Rica in four and the US has featured three times. Mexico has consistently performed well in the Cup with three, third place finishes and two, second place finishes. The winner of the tournament is awarded a silver trophy called the Copa America trophy, while the runner up is awarded the Copa Bolivia.

The Copa America follows a group stage process and then moves into the knock out stage. The group stage consists of three groups with four teams each. Teams are assigned according to the tournament seeding. In each group teams play three games against the other teams. For each win that a team gets, it is awarded three points. Similarly for each draw a point is awarded to the two teams, but no points are awarded if a team loses. Two teams with the highest points qualify to the next stage from each group. While two, third-best ranked teams are also selected.

In the knockout stage, teams play together and the losing team gets knocked out of the tournament. The quarter finals feature eight teams, which are then narrowed down to four teams in the Semifinals. Two teams from the semis compete for the silver trophy, while the losing two teams from the semis play for the third and fourth place.
