About Opera Lafayette Acteon

Acteon is a story centering on transgression, allegory and transformation, where the ideal pastoral setting changes into a rather poetic landscape of loss, narrated through some of the most exquisitely fascinating choruses and solos by a cast consisting of a chamber ensemble and seven vocalists. Owing to the finesse of Lafayette’s classically French performances, it is no surprise to find Acteon Opera tickets become such a popular favorite among French opera fans.
Acteon Opera was created in the 1684 spring hunting season and was revised later that year when the title role was changed from haute-contre to being a soprano part. The plot of the opera is based on Metamorphoses by Ovid, which is a tale of Acteon, a hunter who stumbles into an unknown region only to discover the beautiful goddess Diana bathing with her maids. Though the hunter tries his best to hide himself, he is soon discovered to the anger of the goddess who transforms him into a stag. Acteon is then pursued, quite tragically, by his own hounds and torn apart. The story is quite similar to the one narrated in the aria from Dido and Aeneas by Purcell, which was performed the first time in 1989.
Opera Lafayette, which is producing the classic Acteon Opera, is based in Washington D.C. and focuses on producing only French operas from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
