About Hawaii Opera Theatre

The history of this opera organization is quite intriguing. The debut opera production of the company was the popular Puccini’s opera titled as Madama Butterfly. This production was staged in 1961 in the auditorium of the McKinley High School that is located in Honolulu. For the next twenty years after its first production was performed, the opera company collaborated with the Honolulu Symphony. By 1980 the company successfully turned out to be a leading independent corporation which had its tax exempted. The opening independent season of its performances was a year later in 1981 and it comprised of three fabulous productions which critical acclaim to the company. The three productions were titled as Lucia di Lammermoor, La Boheme and the popular production Carmen. In 1987, Supertitles were established for the very first time. Two years later, in 1989 all the seats available for the show were completely sold out prior to the night it was scheduled to be premiered. By the time 1993 came, the membership of this opera organization went beyond 2,000 people. At the moment the Artistic as well as the General Director of the company is Henry G. Atkina who originated from Hawaii and in 1996 he became a part of the company.
In 2002, the Hawaii Opera Theatre showcased a season called as the “Bad Girl Season” that premiered productions such as Carmen, Salome as well as La Traviata.
