South Pacific Toronto Tickets

Revivals usually have a lot to live up to, especially when the original production was an absolute blockbuster. Yet South Pacific’s 2008 Broadway revival has packed quite a punch. South Pacific has recreated the mystique of the original 1949 musical by Oscar Hammerstein & Richard Rodgers, based itself on James A. Michener’s Pulitzer-winning 1947 novel Tales of the South Pacific.

About South Pacific Toronto Tickets

The powerful musical introduces two couples, faltering due to their racial prejudices while threatened by the devastation of the raging WWII on a South Pacific island. US Navy nurse Nellie falls for a French plantation owner, Emile, who also secretly fathers two half-Polynesian children. Meanwhile, Lt Cable, out on a spy mission, has romantic exchanges with a local girl Liat, but cannot marry her due to his prejudices.
Bartlett Sher directed the most recent revival, with musical staging by Christopher Galetti & Joe Langworth. South Pacific employs music by Rodgers & lyrics by Hammerstein, who also contributes on the book with Joshua Logan. The revival premiered at Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont Theater in April 2008.
Awash with themes of optimism & racial undertones relevant to the times, South Pacific garnered rave reviews. The 26-member orchestra, the largest for touring productions, works splendidly well. Seven 2008 Tonys, including best revival, went to South Pacific.
The 1950 & 2009 US Tours generated great fanfare for South Pacific. And if South Pacific Toronto tickets sales are anything to go by, the Four Seasons Center is the place to be.
