About Phantom of the Opera San Diego Tickets

How Phantom of the Opera came into existence

The Phantom of the Opera is the brainchild of Andrew Lloyd Webber who proposed the idea of the musical to Cameron Mackintosh in 1984. He had been planning on making a romantic piece and Gaston Leroux’s book, ‘Phantom of the Opera’ became his inspiration to make the musical. The preview of the first act was held at the Sydmonton in 1985 and after receiving positive feedback it made its Broadway debut in 1988. Phantom of the Opera’s music is provided by Lloyd himself with lyrics from Charles Hart and Richard Stilgoe. Its plot circles around Christine Daaé who becomes the love interest of the mysterious musical genius.

Worldwide recognition

The Phantom of the opera received a lot of success. The musical has been seen by people in twenty seven countries. It is also the longest running show in Broadway history and the second longest running West End musical after Les Misérables. The play also received a Laurence Olivier Award and a Tony Award in 1986 and 1988 for the Best Musical.
