About Les Miserables

The musical has been inspired from a book of the same name by Victor Hugo with music given by Claude-Michel Schonberg and lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer. The musical opened in the West End in 1985 in London at Barbican Arts Centre and in 1987 in Broadway in Washington at the Kennedy’s Center Opera House. Les Miserables was one of the musicals opened on Broadway in the same time including Phantom of Opera, Cats and Miss Saigon; however, Les Miserables became the most famous one.

The musical has been adopted in twenty-one languages and have run worldwide in thirty eight countries, receiving similar positive reviews from everywhere. Les Miserables is a heart-touching tale of mankind standing up for their rights, the epic drama of everyday life, its harsh realities and the struggles to survive disgraces. The story starts with the character Jean Valjean who is a convict and released after nineteen years in prison. After finding mercy with no one in the town, he is given the refuge at by the bishop of Digne. Valjean robs the bishop but the bishop lets him off the hook with the promise that he will become an honest man. Promising, Valjean leaves the town and comes to live in Montreuil as Madeleine. Fantine comes in the story, falling in love and giving birth to an illegitimate kid who comes to be known as Cosette.

The story then turns to Cosette with her being the main character along with Valjean. The story continues with Cosette falling in love with Marius but Valjean resisting it. Then there comes the political unrest and the whole struggle continues between the on-going love of Marius and Cosette. The story ends happily with Valjean dying in peace and Marius and Cosette getting married happily.

Act 1 of the musical consist of scores like "At the End of the Day", "I Dreamed a Dream", "Lovely Ladies", "The Runaway Cart", "Master of the House", "Look Down", "Stars", "A Heart Full of Love" and "One More day" while act 2 comprises of songs like, "On My Own", "Little People", "Night of Anguish", "Drink With Me", "The Final Battle", "Every Day", "Beggars at the Feet" and a final song sung by the whole company. The main characters of the musical include, Jean Valjean, Inspector Javert, The Bishop of Digne, Fantine, Bamatabois, Fauchelevant, Young Cosette, Madame Thenardier, Gavroche, Enjolras, Marius Pontmercy Eponine, Cosette, Brujon, Babet, Claquesous and Grantaire.

To mark the 25th anniversary of the musical, Les Miserables embarked on an international tour starting from Cardiff at the Wales Millennium Center while the 25th anniversary concert was held at the O2 Arena in 2010. The 10th anniversary concert of the musical was held at the Royal Albert Hall in 1995. The production was made a little different from the original in terms of costumes and sets to add a new flavor to it. The musical has made a US tour thrice, the first once being started from Boston. The musical has won 6 Tony Awards including Tony Award for Best Musical, Best Scenic Design and Best Direction of a Musical, John Kraaijkamp Musical Awards and London Lifestyle Award.
