About Fox Valley Symphony Traditions

Maesch was also a talented composer. Not long back, Brian Groner, who is the current Dean of Fox Valley Symphony, was sent a score through mail by an orchestra librarian who believed Groner might be interested in looking at the piece created by a composer who had lived in Fox Valley. The piece turned out to be the Suite on Children’s Tunes, the orchestra parts of which had been lost sometime in the last few years so that it was only the score that was left. The Fox Valley Symphony alongside the Lawrence Conservatory has taken as its new task to recreate those missing parts and pieces of music, perform them before a live audience and then to place them in their rightful spot inside the orchestral library of Lawrence Conservatory. The performance features special guest artist Wen Lei Gu, who is the Violin Professor at Lawrence. Fox Valley Symphony Traditions tickets are set to make a rare treat for classic music enthusiasts who will savor the fine pieces.
Fox Valley Symphony Traditions will also showcase in addition to the collaborative presentation, two Lawrence faculty members alongside Fox Valley’s principal horn player for the program’s last two pieces. The event will also mark the first time tenor Steven Paul Spears, a Lawrence voice faculty member and principal horn Bruce Atwell will perform with Fox Symphony in Serenade for Tenor, Strings and Horn by Benjamin Britten. The latter piece was written somewhere in 1943 as a song cycle, which can be set to play music to six poems arranged by British composers, all of which are on the subject of the night. In this part of the program, the complex music is said to address both the soothing as well as sinister moods of darkness.
Also featured in the Fox Valley Symphony Traditions show, is yet another winning piece called the Elgar Violin Concerto by cherished British composer Edward Elgar that will be performed by Wen Lie Gu. Many of Elgar’s works have become part of the British as well as classical concert repertoire across the world, and some of his most recognized pieces include Enigma Variations, Pomp and Circumstance Marches, two symphonies and concertos fro the cello and violin. He also created choral works such as The Dream of Gerontius, among several chamber songs and music, and in 1924 was appointed as Master of the King’s Musick. This particular composition by Elgar which is to be performed at the show, was originally composed in 1910, and carries a Spanish quotation that simply means ‘here lies the enshrined soul of …’ Till this day, no one has been able to find out whose soul the inscription has referred to, remaining till now, one of the most thrilling enigmas of Edward Elgar.
