The viewers can enjoy the courageous adventure and timeless love of Aladdin with princess Jasmine. Based on the Disney animated movie Aladdin featured in 1992, the musical Aladdin was presented at the 5th Avenue Theatre in 2011 followed by performances at the Tuacahn Amphitheatre and the Muny Theatre. The musical provides the audience with a memorable experience that can be cherished with the Academy Award winning songs and some new numbers written in particular for Broadway.

About Aladdin

The brand new stage production has been designed by Tony Award winning choreographer and director Casey Nicholaw. The music compositions are done by Tony Award winner Alan Menken.  Legendary Howard Ashman and Tony Award winner Tim Rice presented the lyrics for the show whereas Chad Beguelin did the book with some additional lyrics. For the musical adaptation the role of Aladdin and Jasmine was played by Adam Jacobs and Courtney Reed. Jonathan Freeman played the role of Jafar in the musical. Freeman originally played the villain’s voice in the movie. The additional cast featured Seán G. Griffin as the Sultan, James Monroe Iglehart as Genie and Don Darryl Rivera as Iago among other characters.

In Nov 2013, a tryout of the musical was run at the Ed Mirvish Theatre before the Broadway performances were scheduled the following year.  The pre-Broadway production released optimistic reviews about the musical. The National Post appreciated the lighting, choreography, direction, score, altered characterizations, staging and design of the musical. The post referred to the Aladdin musical as the “best ever stage version of a movie". Review in The Vancouver Sun states the view point of kids that the theatre is bound to take them to “a whole new world” with the smoke, swords and fantastic tunes of Aladdin.  The popular tunes of Aladdin include the soundtrack "Arabian Nights", "Friend Like Me", "Prince Ali" , "A Whole New World" , "Somebody's Got Your Back" and more.

As soon as the curtain rises and three silly guys are seen riding the puppet camels it sets the tone of the musical. The story takes you straight into the fairytale world of traditional songs and dances. This musical adaptation differs significantly from the film to suit the requirements of the stage. The adapted version of the movie has three sidekicks with the character of Aladdin namely Babkak, Omar and Kassim. As per reviews these characters were originally a part of the movie but were cut later on. These above mentioned riders set the mood of the musical in a light-hearted tone. Kassim talks the audience through the mechanics of the play in a friendly manner whereas the other two Babkak and Omar entertain the viewers with their jokes about  Middle Eastern foods.

The most familiar faces from the movie are of the character Aladdin a ‘street rat’ who gets romantically involved with gorgeous princess Jasmine. Then there is Jafar who plays the villainous role to keep the two apart. Find out how the story turns out for the musical adaptation by getting the Aladdin tickets for your friends and family. Do visit the New Amsterdam Theatre to witness what the musical has in store for the audience.
