About So You Think You Can Dance

The televised dancing phenomenon So You Think You Can Dance was created by Simon Fuller and Nigel Lythgoe, the same production duo that created the British TV show Pop Idol that spawned the smash hit American Idol the following year. The main production company involved in making the show a 'reality' was Fuller's own 19 Entertainment along with Dick Clark Productions. Having already gained credibility with the blind success of Pop Idol and its clone American Idol, So You Think You Can Dance was geared to captivate audiences in a disconnected reality right from the start. And it did exactly that for ten million viewers that tuned in to watch the series premiere. If the American Idol show had created legions of musical 'idol' worshippers, then So You Think You Can Dance was asserting the devotion through ritualized dancing to the gods of media.
Each impending season of So You Think You Can Dance attracts hundreds of dancers, aged between 18 and 30, that strut their stuff in front of a panel of judges in auditions held in around 5-6 cities across the US. Successful applicants are issued a 'ticket to Vegas' on the spot. The 'Vegas week callbacks' then further sift through the chosen dancers by making them go through rigorous rounds of dance routines in small groups and some are even asked to perform solos. About three dozen contestants are shortlisted from which typically 20 make the cut for the final rounds following the Vegas week. The top lot then troops over to the City of Angels aka LA and in the following 8-9 weeks, goes through a whirlwind set of dance performances choreographed to some of the most popular tunes of today as well as yesteryear. Artists ranging from Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, Madonna, Lady Gaga to Elvis Pressley, Yanni, James Brown, Bee Gees and the Righteous Brothers have all had their most popular numbers used as dance soundtracks. The couples that the various dancers had been paired in during the top 20 elimination rounds are broken up and re-paired for the top-ten phase. This part of the show puts the opinions of the viewers at the forefront and determines the fate of the dancers based on the votes cast.
