About Cincinnati Ballet

Cincinnati Ballet was established in 1963 with its debut performance taking place in 1964 at the University of Cincinnati’s Wilson Auditorium. In 1966, with David McLain as director and Wilson Auditorium as its home, the company started to grow ambitiously. After getting professional status in 1970, the Ballet started performing its exclusive classical repertoire and gained fame for its exhibition of Horton technique. In 1994, the company got its permanent home on Central Parkway at Liberty Street and in 1996, Cincinnati Ballet Otto M. Budig Academy was established. Around same time, The Cincinnati Ballet started holding regular performances at the prestigious The Aronoff Center which were praised for their sheer excellence.
Cincinnati Ballet is one of the foremost ballet outfits with classical repertoire. The company has revived various memorable classics over the years including Concerto Barocco, Les Patineurs, The Sleeping Beauty, Pas de Quatre, Balanchine ballets, and Serenade. One of Cincinnati Ballet’s regulation performances includes The Nutcracker which was premiered in 1974 with Frisch’s Restaurants as sponsors. Over three decades since its premier, The Nutcracker continues to be Cincinnati Ballet’s proud tradition. The company’s repertoire also includes La Sylphide and Four Temperaments and pieces by Ronald Hynd and Andre Prokovsky. In mid ‘90s, the Ballet choreographed the company’s original ballet Peter Pan which became a huge success. Lately, The Cincinnati Ballet has been running successful collaborations with Boston Ballet and BalletMet Columbus staging performances of Balanchine’s Jewels (2003), Stars and Stripes (2006) and Swan Lake (2009).
While housed at Liberty Street, The Cincinnati Ballet has performed at The Aronoff Center for over a decade and has toured all over America including distant cities of Anchorage, Alaska, Indianapolis and Cleveland and in Europe. The company along with Suzanne Farrell Ballet has also been featured at Kennedy Center in 2008.
