The Birth of the Eifman Ballet
Born in Siberia on the 22nd July 1946, Boris Eifman had a childhood dream of becoming a choreographer. His penchant for ballet dance is rooted in his teenage years and he still claims to stick to his childhood passion. At the age of 13, Eifman decided what he wanted from his career and enrolled in 1966 at the Leningrad Conservatory’s choreography department. In the early 1970s, Eifman grabbed attention with his critically acclaimed debut “Icarus”. The artist joined the Vaganova Academy at the Kirov Ballet School as the official choreographer and created many plays and ice shows. His sophomore performance “Gaianeh” was a phenomenal hit that also had a film version. The artist also choreographed “Fire Bird” in 1975 for the Kirov Ballet.
Originally known as the Leningrad New Ballet, The St. Petersburg Eifman Ballet was formed in 1977, as an experimental ballet theatre for choreographer Boris Eifman. The theatre was an avant-garde in the Russian dance industry and many critics were skeptical of the artist’s individualistic repertoire. A choreographic ‘dissident’, Eifman worked with literary topics, often choosing novel music and audacious dance moves. Nevertheless, the gifted artist was able to grasp the interest of his audience with his debut performances like “Icarus” and “Gaianeh”.
With more than fifty ballet performances to his credit, Eifman has revolutionized the concept of classical dance by epitomizing the expressiveness and dynamism of ballet dance. A philosophical choreographer, Eifman worries about the problems of the world today and highlights the complications and complexes of human life. His self-defined genre is the “psychological ballet” and he has been declared as one of the world’s best choreographer, as New York Times states, “The ballet world in search of a major choreographer need search no more. He is Boris Eifman.”
Eifman Ballet’s Rising Popularity
Boris Eifman’s ballet theatre gained widespread popularity when it began touring the world with its exceptional artistic gamut. Hungry for original and fresh work, the public was instantly hooked to its performances and the ensemble received numerous accolades for its shows at the Champs Elysees Theatre in Paris. The Eifman Ballet is known for its dedication, technique and onstage acumen that earned performers various awards like Golden Mask, Russian Government tributes in Culture and the Golden Soffit Awards. Award winning performers include artists like Dmitry Fisher, Anastasia Sitnikova, Oleg Gabyshev and Sergey Volobuev.
Achievements and Honors
Boris Eifman has bagged numerous awards such as the People’s Artist of Russia in 1995, Order of Merit for the Fatherland, 2nd class in 2012, State Prize of the Russian Federation in 1998, Triumph Award in 1996 and many more. The passionate choreographer completed the Boris Eifman Dance Academy in the 2013 with the help of the government and aims to build another ballet institution in St. Petersburg soon. With exceptional shows such as “Anna Karenina”, “Tchaikovsky” and “Beyond Sin”, under his belt, Boris Eifman is an artist worth watching.
