The idea behind this uproarious new comedy is none other than the Tony Award winner David Henry Hwang already legendary for his M. Butterfly. He visits China frequently to witness the exciting, state-of-the-art developments taking place there. While visiting a newly established arts center, he was impressed by the use of latest technology and great design but was amazed by the ridiculous signs in badly translated English. Hence, the great idea of writing a play on this topic was born with amazingly successful results.
With perfectly timed dialogs, Chinglish is an instant success and brings to light the ludicrous scenarios encountered by Daniel Cavanaugh (James Waterston), an American businessman, who goes to a Chinese province to secure a financially rewarding contact but is hindered by the cultural and language differences. The disparities are so monumental that he starts questioning even his basic conducts learned throughout his life in America. The funny situations include the unreliable translators, the Australian-born consultant (Stephen Pucci) who could be a fraud and a beautiful, supportive government official Xu (Jennifer Lim) who entices but cannot be understood! The flawless actors perform realistically to bring these absurd situations on the stage and make the spectators laugh until they cry.
Chinglish is receiving raving reviews for its witty dialog, enthralling direction and elaborate sets. The play has been nominated for five Joseph Jefferson Awards in the categories of Director (Leigh Silverman), Actress in a Principal Role, Scenic Design, New Work and Best Production. The play is coming on Broadway after enjoying tremendous success at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago, IL.
Chinglish provides its audience with approximately two hours of fantastic entertainment in the form of perfectly-delivered, clever dialogs that keeps the smile on the faces of the spectators throughout the play. Furthermore, the romantic interest between the businessman and the apparently helpful government official ignites the stage with adorably sexy and confusing situations that are side-splittingly hilarious.
The play brings to the stage a very realistic scenario faced by numerous American businessmen when they venture to China looking for lucrative deals and cheap labor. America and China are face to face in the new global economy; they really want to work together but are hindered by differences in customs. Pick up a Christmas decoration in any departmental store in your city and you will find out that it has been made in China. Now, imagine the difficulties our businessman must be encountering explaining their requirements to workers who do not understand our language!
The brilliantly enacted comical scenes are too good and should not be missed at all as they are live. No camera tricks and no recordings; just purely and utterly live. Nothing can compete with a live performance and that too of a superb comedy like Chinglish. Everything is seen when it happens and that adds a natural charm to the whole ambience. Seeing a comedy movie on television or even in cinema is incomparable to live theatre and that is what you will get when you get your Chinglish tickets . Do buy them and have a memorable day with your family and simply laugh and forget all your worries. Enjoy two hours of complete bliss that is almost magical in its intensity.
