Public Theater Extends Limited Run of Girl from the North Country Musical

The North American run of Girl from the North Country started on September 11, 2018 at the Public Theater’s Newman Theater. Following three weeks’ extension, the demand has increased for Girl from the North tickets as it will now run through till December 9, 2018. At the helm of the musical is writer Conor McPherson and the music is by none other than the legend Bob Dylan.

The Off-Broadway cast includes Todd Almond playing the role Elias Burke. Tony Award nominee Mare Winningham stars as Elizabeth Laine; whereas, another Tony nominee Marc Kudisch plays Mr. Burke. Sydney James Harcourt of Hamilton’s fame steps in as Joe Scott and Colton Ryan who shined in Dear Evan Hansen has been roped in as Gene Laine. 

The production team features Rae Smith as the scenic and costume designer. Mark Henderson serves as the lighting designer and the sound design is by Simon Baker. Musical supervision along with the orchestration arrangements are by the talented Simon Hale.

Among the greatest playwrights in theater right now, Conor McPherson has created an ingenious show that beautifully weaves the music of Bob Dylan into a piercing drama about an American soul.

What’s It About

Girl from the North Country’s story is nestled deeply at a boarding house that’s run by a man named Nick Laine. The boarders are a bunch of dreamers, drifters and depression stricken risk takers.

Elizabeth Laine is Nick’s wife who is diagnosed with early dementia and together they have an adopted, African American daughter Marianne who won’t disclose the identity of the father of her unborn child. Then there is a husband-wife duo, heavily indebted with a mentally disabled son and a reverend who doesn’t give second thoughts to blackmailing. The story is narrated by a doctor who is addicted to opium and his role is akin to that of oral traditional folk tales.

Bob Dylan boasts of an eclectic musical repertoire and the musical supervisor Simon Hale uses his melodies to perfection. The traditional folk genre has been re-imagined in Girl from the North Country, treating the audiences to emotional and mysterious music.

In one of the scenes, Marianne croons “Tight Connection to My Heart” and it’s surely an intense performance driven by depths of yearning. “Like a Rolling Stone” is another track that stands out, performed by Elizabeth Laine. The revised rendition is more grotesque and charged as compared to the original number.  

Conor McPherson has used Bob Dylan’s songs to give the characters a special space, somewhere they can dream and hope for a better life. McPherson builds a novelistic tapestry of archetypal characters, amplifying the feelings of depression, hope, yearning and despair. A stirring production, Girl from the North Country will definitely get under your skin, feeling undeniably true to the bone.

The haunting melodrama is distinct and acutely moving – making Bob Dylan’s songs timeless.
