The Gophers has a rich tradition of sports that dates backs to 1850’s. The University assembles sports history and tradition equaled by very few. The Gopher mascot and the name Golden Gophers is a tradition that has a historical link. The name has been picked up referring back to 1857 when Minnesota was tabbed as the "Gopher State." They were started calling as "Golden Gophers" from 1930s when radio announcer Halsey Hall gave them this nick, referring to their golden attire on the field.
The Golden Gophers are provided with the best of facilities by the University administration. On the East Bank of the Minneapolis campus, most of the training and competitive play facilities are located. Williams Arena is used for basketball matches of both men and women teams while Mariucci Arena and Ridder Arena serve as hockey arenas for the Gophers. Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome and TCF Bank Stadium have been the homes of Gophers football champs.

Now considered as a regular and essential part of any sporting event, cheerleading was first introduced in 1898, when a student called Johnny Campbell offered to lead organized cheers at football games. He kept cheering the team throughout the tournament with his "yell leaders"; thus gave a way to the tradition of cheerleading.
Although Gophers excel in every sporting field, but their football team is the one that attracts most of the attention of sports lovers. They enjoy the superstar status inside and outside the university. The football team of Minnesota Golden Gophers is one of the oldest programs in the history of college football. Competing in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision and the Big Ten Conference, they are ranked in the A-list of college football. The Gophers have won six National Championships in and eighteen Big Ten Conference Championships. The National Championships came to the Gophers in 1934, 1935, 1936, 1940, 1941 and 1960.
The Minnesota Golden Gophers college football team scored a 4-0 victory over Hamline University in its first ever game played on September 29, 1882. From there onwards started the glorious journey of university’s football team which rose to unparalleled fame in the early 20th century. They posted winning records from 1900 - 1919. They won three straight National Championships from 1934 – 1936, and proudly became the last Division I team to accomplish this feat. The Gophers also won two more national championships, in 1940 and 1941 respectively. Famous for their rivalry with the Badgers, the Gophers conveniently established their position as the rulers of college football for so many years.
1960’s witnessed another winning streak for the Gophers when they won another national championship, their sixth one. The team also earned its first berth in the Rose Bowl by winning the 1960 Big Ten title, and later enjoyed a fantastic Rose Bowl victory. Besides football, the Gophers have made their mark in every sport that they play. Their athletes have won two gold and various silver medals in the Olympics. Another important team is ice hockey that has made it to National Championships and WCHA Tournament Championships, besides giving NCAA Frozen Four appearances. The Baseball team has been to three National Championships in 1956, 1960 and 1964 along with twenty one Big Ten Regular Season Championships and seven Big Ten Tournament Championships. Men and Women cross country, Gymnastic, Soccer, Swimming, Golf, Tennis, Volleyball and Wrestling teams has also made several appearances on National and International level and won some championships as well. The Men’s basketball team has won eight Big Ten Regular Season Championships and appeared in six NCAA tournaments. Women’s team has outdone them with seven appearances in Tournament Appearances.
