The upcoming game is part of the CONCACAF Champions League, an annual football competition that began in 1962 and is organized by the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football. This competition is known for presenting matches between top North American clubs. It currently consists of 24 football teams from the North American, Caribbean and Central American zones. From North America, Canada brings in one club, and Mexico and the United States each bring in four clubs. From Central America, two clubs qualify from the football federations of Costa Rica, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala and Panama, and one club from Belize and Nicaragua. From the Caribbean zone, three teams qualify from the CFU Club Championship.

The current format for the CONCACAF Champions League game includes eight groups of three teams each. Matches are held, and each winner from the eight groups qualifies for the quarterfinals. From the four teams, two advance to the finals, from which the CONCACAF Champions winner is chosen. Last year's winner for the CONCACAF Champions League was C.F. Monterrey, who won against Santos Laguna with a score of 4-2. With this win, Monterrey was able to secure its third CONCACAF win.

Countries that have been able to present football teams with the greatest number of wins include Mexico, with a whopping 29 wins and 14 runner-ups, Costa Rica in second place with six wins and five runner-ups, and El Salvador following closely with three wins. Sporting Park, located in Kansas City, formerly known as the Livestrong Sporting Park, invites audiences to watch the game live. This two hundred million dollar, state-of-the-art football venue has space for over 25,000 people and was inaugurated in 2011. It is currently operated by Global Spectrum and was named the "Venue of the Year" by TheStadiumBusiness Awards in 2012, as well as being amongst the finalists of the "Sports Facility of the Year Award" and "New Venue Award". CONCACAF Champions League tickets are available to watch two football titans come face to face and battle it out to win the CONCACAF Championship League.
