The San Jose Earthquakes are a professional American soccer team from San Jose, California. The club was founded in 1995 under the name "San Jose Clash". Currently, the club is owned by Earthquakes Soccer, LLC and is one of ten MLS chartered members to have completed the first season in the league in 1996. They are also the team that took part in the first game in the history of MLS, winning 1-0 against D.C. United.

Seasons typically start in March and last until November. The 2011 season is scheduled to have each team play 34 games, with ten teams advancing to the postseason and then competing for the MLS Cup.
San Jose Earthquakes play their home games at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, California. The stadium has a capacity of 10,300. It was inaugurated with a football game in 1967 and is named after the football coach Lawrence T. "Buck" Shaw. The ground was a training field for Brazil’s soccer team before the 1994 FIFA World Cup. The ground is made up of natural green grass and is owned by Santa Clara University.
To date, the San Jose Earthquakes have been successful in winning the 2001 and 2003 MLS Cup titles. They won the MLS Supporters’ Shield in 2005 and have been runners-up twice. They also own two MLS Western Conference cups and one playoff cup. In minor trophies, they are winners of the California Clasico four times, have won the Carolina Challenge Cup once, and own one Heritage Cup. Additionally, the Earthquakes have won various international cups, including the CONCACAF Champions’ Cup three times. San Jose Earthquakes' biggest and most historical rivalry is with Los Angeles Galaxy. On a smaller scale, they have a rivalry with C.D. Chivas USA and Houston Dynamo. They wear blue and black jerseys with a football represented as a rising sun inside a triangle as the logo. The Earthquakes have a dedicated fan following, including supporter groups called Club Quake and The Casbah. Their most dedicated fan is Krazy George Henderson. The Earthquakes' mascot is Q, a puppet of a blue-colored skin known as a deformed human being who once fell into a radioactive fissure during an earthquake.
