Megan James and Corin Roddick are natives of Edmonton, Alberta Canada and that is where they both fell in love with music. Roddick was a drummer and James used to be a brilliant piano player just before the inception of Purity Ring. James also had a special talent of writing lyrics. She had started to write when she was only sixteen years old. Roddick had also been drumming for a few years. Since both of them were pretty good at live instruments it came as a surprise to some people when they put them away and went for electronic music.

The love of music was still at the heart of that change. They were avid listeners of R&B and hip-hop and the music that formed the core of those genres is what forced them to give up their instruments and go for electronic music. The seeds for the formation of Purity Ring were put in place when James and Roddick were members of another group Born Gold whose previous name was Gobble Gobble.

During Born Gold days, Roddick began to experiment with electronic music. A little tweaking here and a little tweaking there led to a fascination that became an overwhelming desire to venture into the world of electronic music. He then requested James to provide vocals for the song "Ungirthed" and that led to Purity Ring being incepted. The track itself made its debut in the year 2011. The song received positive feedback from fans and critics and pushed the duo in the limelight.

James takes care of the lyrics now that Purity Ring is well and truly underway.  A lot of what she writes comes from the heart which gives the songs a special emotional ring. The release of "Ungirthed" and the subsequent applause it got earned the band their first global recording deal with 4AD. Last Gang Records signed them up for the release of their music in their native Canada.

Purity Ring also announced that their first album titled Shrines is being worked on and it came out on 24th July, 2012. It became a big hit especially with fans of electronic music and that further announced the profile of the group. Purity Ring have made headlines for all the right reasons since their inception. James and Roddick are both in their early twenties so they have time on their side in the quest to reach the top of the ladder.
