The band started out with just Zachary Cole Smith as a guitarist from Beach Fossils, who performed solo in 2011. He named the band “Dive” after the Nirvana song which might have been his inspiration to start music. He then added to the lineup his old friend Andrew Bailey, also from Connecticut, as a guitarist, Devin Ruben as a bassist (he was from New York) and Colby Hewitt, who was a former member of Smith Westerns, as the band’s drummer. Zachary explained that everyone’s unique talent gave them each a firm ground, and he further explained that it gave everyone a water mark, which is why the band was named Dive.

DIIV released demos with Captured Records; two singles named "Sometime", "Human", recorded only By Zachary Smith. The band said they had out grown the name Dive, but in reality a problem had arrived. A 1990’s Belgian group was already named Dive. But the band stated that he name was changed to DIIV in respect to Dirk Ivens. In an interview Smith stated that he does not really care what the band is named, and they weren’t actually contacted by Dirk Iven’s lawyers, or himself. He continued saying that he started out with no internet, and low hopes that his music would ever leave his bedroom. The band’s original name inspired its birth but now had no meaning to them; the music is still the same as is his fan base.
DIIV released their full debut album on June 26th, 2012 but gave the fans a sneak peek earlier with the single "Geist" and a music video for" How Long Have You Know". The songs on Oshin were inspired by Nirvana and world music. Smith was also inspired by Malian groups. In an interview he said that "People didn’t seem to pick up on the Malian guitar players, especially Baba Salah whose record I got at the library". He continued saying that Baba Salah’s one record, Borey, influenced the way he made music.
The album Oshin numbered 22 on Stereogum’s list of top 50 albums. They are a structured indie rock band and this album shows the unusual experiment to show if a whole band based on voice or any other instrument can rely on the guitar to carry the song’s true intent. DIIV’s music takes the listener to a sensory experience with their smooth music. They might not be loud like the rest of the music, but a sense of connection is offered, the music also takes a turn for a darker side by coming from the tension of Interpol but then delving inside an emo drunk from Fugazi.
Zachary Smith’s vocals are on a higher scale but the guitar numbs things out, creating a calm feeling. They are at a place where bands like Real Estate and the War on Drugs were when they released their own debut full-length albums. These albums too blurred instruments and crafted songs with statement. The debut has made DIIV’s mark and has shown what that what they do is really not important but openly defines what they do and what they do now, leaving one mystery. Their vision is quite different to the bands that are their contemporaries. With DIIV tickets, audience will have a new experience altogether.
