Formative Years

The passionate musicians met each other at the East Carolina University in Greenville in 2003 and formed the initial ensemble Art Lord & the Self-Portraits. The lineup consisted of Herring, Welmers, Cashion, Kymia Nawabi and Adam Beeby. This association could not last long and after releasing four studio albums, the band parted in 2005. However, the young musicians Cashion, Welmers and Herring, determined for success, formed another band titled Future Islands with the drummer Erick Murillo. The band went on to make its debut album “Wave Like Home” in collaboration with Chester Gwazda in the year 2006 but the album finally got released in 2008 under the Upset the Rhythm label. Interestingly, the album’s cover art was designed by the former Art Lord & the Self-Portraits member Kymia Nawabi.

Career Success

In 2007 the Future Islands decided to move to Baltimore and gradually climbed the success ladder. The same year Murillo left the band and the remaining artists embarked on the journey on their own. Later that year, the band recorded its first three-piece “Feathers and Hallways 7” in Oakland, California. The collection was released during its first ever national tour and was a big encouragement for the band. In 2010, Future Islands released its sophomore album “In Evening Air” under the Thrill Jockey label. The album was recorded in a living room and received mixed reviews. The following year the musicians came up with third album under the same label, titled “On the Water”, followed by extensive country-wide touring. The troupe announced its contract with the 4AD label, which was to release its fourth album “Singles”. The album was released in March 2014 and acted as a magnum opus for the new-found band. After its epic performance at David Letterman’s live show, the album’s lead single “Seasons (waiting on You)” became its breakthrough single.

Critical Applause

Following the release of its fourth album, the band has been enjoying relatively positive reviews from the fans and critics alike. The band’s composition and work is often described as “terse yet passionate music wrought from a stripped back palette.” The band members have been praised for their instrumental and vocal abilities that perfectly synch with each other, “Gerrit Welmers’ synthesizer melodies tumble across the austere wilderness of William Cashion’s post-punk bass pulse, driven ever forward by ecstatic electronic rhythms.”

Future Islands is also known to work with a variety of artists from other genres like Santa Dads, Dan deacon and Double dagger to name a few. If you really want to witness this promising band treat the fans with its alternative and indie pop tunes, then don’t miss out on getting your Future Islands tickets as soon as possible.
