JJ Grey & MOFRO are a Florida-based band, whose music can be best described as a unique blend of swamp funk, sly Memphis soul, riff-based Southern rock, and of course their winning impassioned singing. Their current lineup comprises of bass guitarist Todd Smallie, tenor saxophonist Dennis Marion, drummer Anthony Cole, organ-player Anthony Farrell, guitarist Andrew Trube, and multi-instrumentalist/vocalist and principle songwriter, JJ Grey.
Since their inception in the late nineties, they have released six albums. They have also toured around the globe rigorously, playing their entrancing songs and creating that strong connection with the audience that perhaps the likes of Nirvana once did. Their discography includes Lochloosa, Blackwater, Country Ghetto, The Choice Cuts, Orange Blossoms, Brighter Days, Georgia Warhorse, and their most recent release, This River. The latter most features some of their upbeat material yet, like Your Lady, She’s Shady and Florabama. As always, while working on tracks for their next record, the band continues to tour, playing their swamp beats across the Atlantic with different setlists every night. It thus comes as no surprise to see why the JJ Grey tickets are such a sought-after treat among funk/soul fans who love running after the band from show to show.
JJ Grey & MOFRO started their journey in the mid-nineties when Daryl Hance and JJ Grey signed a record deal with a UK-based label and began playing concerts in Europe under the name ‘Mofro Magic’. The two then met up in their hometown of Jacksonville, where they were both employed by an air conditioning company. Later they developed great friendship due to their common passion for music. ‘Mofro’ was termed by Grey as a way of explaining the band’s trademark sound. Soon their deal with the London label failed so by 2001, the two signed with the Jacksonville-based label, Fog City Records, which led to the release of their debut album, Black Water.
The act issued their most recent album The River in April 2013, which was named after St. John’s River that was the focal point of Grey’s childhood. The River runs through freewheeling celebrations reflected in Florobama, journeying into darker inner truths in Somebody Else, expressing those beer-soaked late-night confessions of Your Lady, and winds up with a heart-warming ballad of the nearly-forgotten in Ballads of Larry Webb. With this album, produced by Dan Prothero, the band yet again came back to St. Augustine’s Retrophonics Studio, churning out some of their most powerful tunes yet.
Many of the songs played by JJ Grey & MOFRO are written by Grey and many of them focus on his childhood in Jacksonville and his experiences growing up. The maestro has been praised for his lyrical content that primarily takes the form of storytelling, inspired by his real life memories and what he learnt from them. Grey brings in his own wisdom to songs such as The Sweetest Things, Sun is Shining Down, and War. He attributes his characteristic narrative approach towards lyrics, to artists such as Jim Reeves, and Big Bad John, who have deeply influenced his manner of writing. He also sites southern rock musicians like Jerry Reed, Otis Redding, Toots Hibbert and Lynyrd Skynyrd, who have inspired his evolving sound.
The band is famous for its extensive touring schedule and has performed at some of the most prominent summer festivals like Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits, Rothbury, Wakarusa, and All Good Festival. In their early touring days, they became known in the jam band circles since they were playing with such acts as Galactic, Widespread Panic and Ben Harper. They have since slowed down just a tad bit, compared to how they were back in the day when they only started. At the time they were performing about two hundred concerts a year, whereas now they play up to a hundred and fifty. However, as Grey insists, their strength lies in being more of a live act that performs better on stage than in the controlled boundaries of the studio. So make sure to grab your share of the JJ Grey tickets and be there to rock to their exciting music.
