About A Gentlemans Guide To Love and Murder

A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder premiered at Hartford, Connecticut in 2012. 2013 saw the production travel to the Old Globe Theater in San Diego. With both productions generating positive reviews, the musical finally made it on to Broadway with a big opening in November 2013. All the productions have garnered massive praise, not just for the book and the music, but also for the direction and the skills of the actors.

The musical follows an Englishman of the Edwardian era who finds out that his place in the line of succession to dukedom is stuck at number nine. Montague Navarro D’Ysquith is the son of a woman who is distanced by her noble family after she marries someone from a lower class. Montague, or Monty as he is referred to in the play, finds out about the possibility of a family fortune and fashions himself as the heir to the legacy. Determined to get his hands on the goods, he decides that he will do whatever is necessary to become first in the line of succession, even if it necessitates killing the first eight in line. Divided into two acts, the play is the perfect dark comedy. Despite numerous murders, the play retains it playfulness, and does not become a tragic tale.

The director of the musical, Darko Tresnjak, is an eminent director of theater in America. He currently serves as the Artistic Director at Hartford Stage and he has worked with several successful productions such as the Merchant of Venice, The Skin of Our Teeth, Under Milk Wood and A Comedy of Errors. Having worked extensively on Shakespeare, his expertise in creating period English dramas on stage is exceptional. His extensive experience in theater ensures the production of this musical is well knit and brilliantly executed. Robert L. Freedman, who is credited for the book and the lyrics of the musical, comes from a history of critically acclaimed plays and musicals. He has been nominated for an Emmy, and won a Writers Guild Award for his work on the HBO series, A Deadly Secret. Collaborating with Freedman on the lyrics and music is Steven Lutvak who makes his Broadway debut with this musical. While this may be his first time on Broadway, he has already been spotted by Time Magazine, and is included in their list of People To Watch.

The excellence of the creative team is matched equally by the cast. The protagonist is played by Bryce Pinkham, a graduate of the Yale School of Drama. He has appeared in numerous productions on and off Broadway, and his commitment to playing the title-chasing, power hungry Englishman is commendable. Lisa O’Hare makes her Broadway debut with the musical, and is coming in with a background in TV shows such as Castle. Another Broadway debutant is Lauren Worsham who brings her considerable singing experience to the production. Theater veteran Jane Carr also joins the cast and brings her knowledge to the stage. Perhaps the most anticipated performer on the cast is Jefferson Mays who plays all eight of the D’Ysquith family. With each of his characters killed off systematically, Mays succeeds in delivering his characters perfectly, making sure that every D’Ysquith is unique and memorable.

The musical has been nominated for numerous awards as of 2014. With a staggering eleven award nominations at the Outer Critics Circle Awards and twelve nominations at the Drama Desk Awards, the musical has proved its merit. The New York Times has already called the musical “the greatest musical-theater performance of the year,” and other publications such as TIME magazine, The Hollywood Reporter and The New York Observer have dubbed the musical as the “Best of the Year.” Secure your chance to watch one of the most fascinating musicals of this season by purchasing A Gentlemans Guide To Love And Murder tickets today.
